According to the railway transportation department, with the establishment of the Jiazhou Passenger Railway Line Company Ltd., the construction of the Jiaoji passenger line will soon be implemented. The new railway line is expected to be put into service before the 2008 Olympics while the current Jiaoji Line will then be set aside for cargoes only.

The 364 kilometers passenger line links Qingdao and Jinan with the designed speed amounting to 200 to 250 kilometers per hour. 143 kilometers will be rebuilt and 17 new stations be set up, inclusive of the North Qingzhou Station and the North Jiaozhou Station. The new line will be able to transport over 60 million people each year, or six times as many as the current passenger numbers. There will be passenger trains passing cities along the Qingdao to Jinan Line every hour. Railway will then be genuinely integrated into the public transportation system.
