"Zhi Fei", China's first autonomous container ship made its maiden voyage in Qingdao on April 22, 2022. The vessel with 37 containers on board would sail from Qingdao Port Qianwan Port Area to Rizhao Port along a proposed route, marking China's leading position in ship intelligent navigation research and application sector and the launch of the ship bears strategic significance to promoting intelligent vessel technology development in the country.
The 300TEU container merchant ship "Zhi Fei" is China's first transport cargo ship with smart navigation capability. It has a total length of about 110 meters, a width of about 15 meters, a depth of 10 meters, and a designed speed of 12 knots. The containership is equipped with three driving modes - manned driving, remote driving, and unmanned driving, which enables it to realize the intelligent perception of the navigation environment, independent route planning, intelligent collision avoidance, and remote control driving.
Just as self-driving cars make breakthrough through L1 -L5 grading step by step, the commercialization of unmanned ships is not achieved overnight, and there is still a long process to go. As the world largest tonnage class smart container ship that is in operation, "Zhi Fei" has previously launched a large number of intelligent navigation testing and verification in the water of Qingdao, which will provide real ship authentication support to the technical standards of the independent navigation integrated system and the relevant regulations of self-driving vessel maritime supervision.
Gao Weishang, the captain of "Zhi Fei”said, ”the common container ship of the same class requires 20 sailors, while “Zhi Fei” only needs 10 sailors, we will explore to the self-driving direction in future.”
